THE FANATICAL GUIDE TO DEATH STARS

PART V: THE DESIGNERS

"I have the lists.  I know who worked on the Death Star, who Palpatine hired in his think tanks, who taught at the Omwat orbital training center...I know how easy it would be for me to...make them disappear.  Without a trial.  No questions asked...Just because I know they're guilty...the tricky thing about the dark side is that it's so easy to use—and it gets you what you think you want."

--Chief of State Leia Organa Solo

The Alderaan Alliance, an organization formed by the survivors of the holocaust for which it is named, collected the names of the Death Star designers.

Bringing the creators of the Death Stars to justice has proved difficult for the New Republic, as those most responsible—Count Dooku, Poggle the Lesser, and other members of the Separatist Council—died during the Clone Wars.  Not long before the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance did succeed in capturing a number of minor designers, though Tarkin himself perished with the Death Star, his overconfidence providing its own punishment.  Similarly, Tol Sivron's mismanagement of the retreat from Maw Installation resulted in the deaths of most of the scientists who had worked on the Death Star there.  Druth Anamor, Ohran Keldor, Frap Radicon, and Umek Leth died pursuing further projects, while other designers fell outside of Republic jurisdiction.  The mysterious assassinations of Raith Sienar and Stinna Draesinge Sha and the disappearance of Nasdra Magrody led to claims that Leia Organa Solo had arranged for their untimely ends, though these accusations have been disproved.  Bevel Lemelisk remains the only designer known to have been successfully apprehended and tried by the Republic; he was one of the few war criminals, along with Grand Admiral Osvald Teshik, to have received the death penalty.  By contrast, Qwi Xux, the only other notable designer still alive, has been largely forgiven by the galactic community, as she was forced into participating in Tarkin's schemes, and her memories and knowledge of the design process were stripped from her mind by Kyp Durron.  No charges have been brought against her.
