Discovering the locations involved in designing and constructing the original Death Star has proved difficult, as the designers worked in several systems for over two decades to bring the Death Star to fruition. Initially, the Alliance pinpointed Danuta as the Death Star's birthplace, and discovered that Tarkin had used the planet Despayre as a construction site. Much later, the New Republic found that Danuta was only a subsidiary facility, and that the Death Star's construction had not begun at Despayre. Rebel spies had previously learned that the second Death Star had been moved to Endor after beginning construction elsewhere, and so discovering the larger research facility that had designed and produced the Death Stars became a top priority. The New Republic hoped to use the bogus Phantom Ship project developed by the Mrlsst Academy to this end, but this attempt failed. Even after Maw Installation was discovered, the true history of the Death Star's design was hidden for decades, possibly thanks to a campaign waged by Imperial Intelligence to obscure the origin of all the Empire's vital military technology.
